Mozambique's airports witnessed a significant 28% year-on-year increase in intercontinental passengers to just under 150 000 in 2023, according to a recent report released by the Civil Aviation Authority of Mozambique.

The report highlights that the overall number of passengers rose by 20% to 1.97 million in 2023. The strong rise in intercontinental passengers, along with a 46% increase in regional passengers to over 524 000, illustrates the country's growing tourism attractiveness. Domestic air transport saw an increase of 11% to just over 1.27m.

The biggest gainers were Maputo's Jaoquim Chissano International Airport, with a 22% increase to 1.05m, Nampula with a 13% increase to 199 366, and Beira with a 21% increase to 198 269.

Overall aircraft movements grew by 7% to 60 250.

The report highlighted that of the nine international airlines operating in Mozambique pre-Covid, eight are still operational, including LAM, Airlink, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, TAP, Qatar Airways, TAAG and Turkish Airlines.
