Councillors in various municipalities in Gauteng, with the exception of Ekurhuleni, owe their own municipalities R5.5 million in unpaid accounts, Gauteng Finance and Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile has revealed.
Municipal officials also owe municipalities R160.2 million. Together, councillors and officials owed R165.7 million as of 31 December 2025.
Maile was briefing the media on Sunday 1 February on Gautengs state of municipal finances for the first six months of the 2025/26 financial year when he revealed the startling figures.
