The City of Johannesburg Council has approved a recommendation to establish a new position of deputy executive mayor expected to cost taxpayers R1.28 million annually.

107 councillors voted for the proposal, 87 against and 37 abstained in a vote held on Thursday 29 January.

Joburg set to have a deputy mayor

A report presented to council cited a 2023 letter from Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance, who was then Lebogang Maile, suggesting the creation of the post in accordance with the Municipal Structures Act.
