Butterworth Residents Take Matters Into Own Hands To Fix Roads

butterworth residents take matters into own hands to fix roads

Residents of Tobotshane in Butterworth, in the Eastern Cape, have taken it upon themselves to fix their roads. The residents are using bricks and cement to fix their streets to ensure they are not slippery when wet.

They say they have waited for a long time for their roads to be fixed, but their plight is not addressed.

But heavy rains continue to disrupt their efforts.

A resident, Reuben Hengu says the municipality has not responded after spending more than R7 million on grading and putting sandy gravel on the road in 2018.

This road was constructed in 2018. We raised our concerns during the construction because, even though we are not engineers, we saw that was not how a road was supposed to be constructed. There were supposed to be pipes and a drainage system for water to flow. This road is flat. Its even worse because we heard that the budget for it was R7.5 million, but on the ground, it does not reflect the amount used, says Hengu.
