Ratepayers Unite Against Coct's Proposed Budget Hikes

The City of Cape Town Collective Ratepayers' Association CTCRA has voiced strong opposition to the City's draft budget for 2025/2026, labelling it fiscally reckless, legally indefensible, and deeply unfair to the residents who fund the metro's prosperity.
The CTCRA, an umbrella organisation that represents over 45 residents' and ratepayers' associations throughout Cape Town, has initiated a petition that has already attracted over 10,000 signatures in just ten days, highlighting the gravity of the situation, Cape town Etc reports.
CTCRA spokesperson Bas Zuidberg has emphasised the nature of the response from residents, This isn't just technical opposition from civic leaders - this is a city-wide revolt by residents who are being pushed beyond breaking point,
CTCRA argue that the proposed budget hikes, with anticipated increases in monthly property rates between 20 and 30 for most homeowners, are grossly disproportionate, especially when contrasted against the current inflation rate of merely 3.2.
Some homeowners could even face rate increases of up to 40, a staggering economic burden for many middle-income families and retirees living on fixed incomes.
