A suspect arrested for being in possession of R1-million worth of illicit gold and over R300 000 in cash in Johannesburg will appear in a local magistrates court on Monday.
Hawks spokesperson Christopher Singo says officers made the arrest after receiving a tip-off on illegal activities around Sandringham.
The police followed up on the information and the suspect vehicle was spotted driving on Swindler Road and Lee Street. The police stopped the vehicle and searched it. During the search of the vehicle, police discovered 5 grams of illicit gold, and R8 100 cash. The suspect led the police to another property in Sandler Street and upon arrival, the property was searched, and 600 grams of illicit gold was discovered as well as cash amount of R300 000."
