The Confederation of African Football CAF has handed down disciplinary sanctions against the President of the Cameroon Football Federation FECAFOOT, Samuel Etoo, following incidents deemed unethical during the Cameroon vs. Morocco quarterfinal match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
CAFs Disciplinary Committee found Etoo guilty of conduct contrary to the organizations Code of Ethics and Fair Play. As a result, the former African Footballer of the Year has been suspended for four matches and fined 20,000.
The verdict did not come as a major surprise, as Etoo had already been under scrutiny for his behavior surrounding the high-tension encounter. Several actions by Cameroonian players and officials during and after the match were widely criticized, with fingers pointed at the FECAFOOT president even before CAFs ruling was announced.
This sanction adds to a growing list of disciplinary issues involving Etoo. In 2024, FIFA imposed a six-month ban on him after investigations found him guilty of misconduct and harassment of match officials. That incident followed Cameroons elimination from the FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup in Colombia.
FECAFOOT Reacts Strongly
In an official statement released on January 14, 2026, FECAFOOT rejected CAFs decision, describing it as unfair and lacking sufficient evidence.
FECAFOOT further criticized the disciplinary process, raising concerns over procedural fairness.
The federation reaffirmed its support for Etoo and emphasized its commitment to transparency and justice.
Appeal Expected
Samuel Etoo is expected to formally appeal the CAF decision within the timeframe stipulated by the Disciplinary Jury. The outcome of the appeal could have significant implications for his leadership role within Cameroonian football and his standing at the continental level.
