The Congress of South African Trade Unions COSATU has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to reject a recommendation by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers to increase salaries for politicians by 4.1.

Public office bearers POBs include members of the Cabinet including president and deputy president, deputy ministers, premiers and members of provincial executive councils, members of Parliament and provincial legislatures, local government leaders, judges and magistrates, leaders of independent commissions, and traditional leaders.

The Commission has proposed the hikes for the 2025/26 financial year, citing the need to address the issue of salary erosion, and to maintain the purchasing power for POBs, according to a gazette notice published on 18 December.
