Higher Education and Training Deputy Minister, Buti Manamela, says classrooms are more than just places of learning they are also battlegrounds for equality, safety and dignity.
He was speaking at the opening of a seminar on the promotion of gender equality though education in Durban.
The seminar, which brings together government representatives, academics and young people comes ahead of the third G20 working group on education tomorrow in Durban.
Manamela says gender transformative education is more than just providing access to education for girls.
He says it entails the lived realities of young people in schools, at home and on the sports field.
