Atlantis Foundries in Cape Town has brought a 13MW solar farm online. The installation reduces the companys reliance on Eskom while contributing to the City of Cape Towns electricity. Comprising more than 20000 solar panels, it is expected to supply 20 of the companys power needs.
The solar farm is connected to the City of Cape Towns grid so Atlantis Foundries can sell up to 5MW of electricity to the city at certain times of the day. This energy can be distributed across the municipality through the citys wheeling programme. As we reduce our reliance on Eskom, we want residents and businesses to be able to sell their excess power to the city, said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis .
Engineered, financed, constructed and operated by Energy Partners, the solar system is expected to generate over 20000MWh annually. The project is also set to cut more than 21000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
