A rush of grief swept through the Vaal after two more learners died in hospital on Thursday, raising the death toll from the Vanderbijlpark crash to 14. The accused makes his first appearance in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court, reports Cape town Etc .
The collision happened on the morning of Monday, 19 January, when a private scholar transport minibus attempted to overtake several vehicles and hit a side tipper truck on the Golden Highway. Eleven learners died at the scene and others were taken to nearby hospitals.
Gauteng police arrested the 22-year-old driver after he left hospital. Police say he now faces 14 counts of culpable homicide, plus reckless and negligent driving.
