More than 3 000 demonstrators filled the streets of Cape Town on Saturday, urging the South African government to sever all trade and diplomatic relations with Israel, including the closure of its embassy, amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
The large-scale march united pro-Palestinian organisations, faith-based groups from both Muslim and Christian communities, and political parties, making it one of the most significant demonstrations in recent months, as per ENCA . Protesters waved Palestinian flags and held placards with messages such as Don't just feel bad, do something, before delivering a petition of demands to parliament.
South Africa has long positioned itself as a vocal critic of Israel's actions in Gaza. In December 2023, Pretoria filed a case at the UN's highest court, accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Palestinian territory - a charge Israel denies.
