Cape Town's most popular shores are about to undergo a seasonal facelift, with the City launching its annual beach-lowering programme on 1 October 2025.
Known as beach re-profiling, the project is designed to keep the coastline stable and to stop windblown sand from drifting onto nearby roads and vital infrastructure. By lowering the sand levels, high tides are able to wet a larger area of the beach, which helps reduce the risk of sand piling up where it shouldn't.
Alderman Eddie Andrews, the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, explained that the timing is crucial. We are aiming to complete the work ahead of the festive season to ensure beachgoers have unhindered fun when next they visit these beaches, he said.
