taxi driver arrested after maitland stabbing incident

A man believed to be behind a brutal stabbing at a busy Maitland intersection has finally been arrested.

Cape Town police confirmed that a 28-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Monday in connection with a shocking road rage attack that unfolded in broad daylight at the corner of Voortrekker and Canon Roads on 26 June. The suspect faces a charge of attempted murder and is set to appear in court on Wednesday, 16 July.

The incident, which was filmed by a bystander and quickly went viral, shows a minibus taxi driver repeatedly stabbing a 48-year-old man following an altercation. The disturbing footage, which spread across social media platforms, triggered widespread public outrage and renewed criticism of violent behaviour within the local taxi industry.

Law enforcement agencies, including the SAPS Taxi Violence Unit, launched an investigation shortly after the video surfaced, with police confirming that the victim had sustained multiple stab wounds and was rushed to hospital, as Smile FM reported.

Last week, SANTACO Western Cape chairperson Mandla Hermanus said the taxi industry was 'shocked and horrified' by the driver's actions. He confirmed that the driver and taxi owner had been identified through association tags on the vehicle, even though the number plate was not visible in the video. The minibus operates out of the Gugulethu area, according to officials.
