The Embassy of Sweden has opened a new consulate in Cape Town to expand its reach across the Western and Eastern Cape, strengthening a relationship deeply rooted in solidarity and shared values, Cape town Etc reports.
Sweden's support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle laid the foundation for a lasting partnership that has since evolved to include trade, education, innovation, gender equality and climate action.
The new consulate aims to bring these engagements closer to communities in the region, according to Mail Guardian .
Carl Fredrik Sammeli, founder of Bitprop, a social enterprise launched in 2019, will serve as honorary consul. Bitprop helps township homeowners develop rental flats on their properties, creating sustainable income streams and fostering inclusive economic growth.
In Langa, for instance, Nonkosi Klaas used Bitprop's support to build backyard rental units, providing her with a reliable source of income.
