South Africa picked up a point in their 2024 African Nations Championship CHAN opener, while co-hosts Uganda got their campaign up and running with a win.
In the first of two matches taking place at the Mandela National Stadium on Friday, South Africa fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Algeria.
Abdennour Belhocini opened the scoring for the Fennec Foxes on 29 minutes, but Bafana Bafana crucially hit back on the stroke of half-time with an equaliser from Thabiso Kutumela 45.
Molefi Ntsekis side moved above Niger up to fourth place in Group C, two points behind Guinea 3rd and Uganda 2nd, who have both played one game more at this stage of the tournament.
In the evening kick-off, Uganda recorded their first victory as they dispatched Guinea 3-0 in Kampala.
