Getting a learner's licence in South Africa has become far tougher than it was just a few years ago. The Road Traffic Management Corporation RTMC has revealed that the national learner driver's licence pass rate has fallen sharply from 68 to just 40 since the rollout of a computerised learner licence testing system across the country.
According to the RTMC, this sharp decline is due to chances for corruption and cheating being eliminated from the system, rather than the test becoming more difficult.
For years, rumours of bought licences and leaked answers have circulated around testing centres in South Africa. In many communities, people openly joked that passing a learner's test depended more on connections than actual road knowledge. Now, officials say technology is finally disrupting that culture.
