The Municipal Demarcation Board MDB has finalised its redrawing of South Africas municipal and ward boundaries, adding 20 new wards to the countrys electoral map.
The board has handed over its final report to the Independent Electoral Commission IEC, marking a significant milestone in the lead-up to the 2026 local government elections.
Historically, the MDB has been responsible for determining municipal boundaries and delimiting wards since its establishment in terms of the Local Government: Municipal Demarcation Act No. 27 of 1998. The boards mandate is to promote democratic governance, accountability and equitable representation.
