shootout in soweto leaves four dead after foiled business robbery

Four suspects have been shot and killed and two arrested during a shootout in iKwezi near Mofolo in Soweto. Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale says members of the Hawks Tactical Operation Management Section, Badboyz private security and the Gauteng Police Highway Patrol were involved in a gunfight with the suspects. She says it followed intelligence that they received about an intended armed robbery at a business premise.

The team picked up the described vehicles near the intended target where the robbery was set to take place. Upon realisation that police were observing, the suspects split and fled into their vehicles. However, the police gave chase and a shootout ensued, resulting in four fatalities, whilst two other suspects were arrested. The detained suspects will face charges of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms. The team is hot on the heels of the seventh suspect who fled on foot during the chase.
