A young woman is missing after being swept away by raging floodwaters in the Western Cape this week. Authorities said that 24-year-old Julene van Wyk disappeared while attempting to cross a low-water bridge during dangerous conditions.
According to ENCA , the tragic incident comes as extreme winter weather grips the nation this season. The missing womans family has asked for privacy as search efforts continue in Slanghoek.
Local authorities urge residents to avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges, noting that just 15cm of moving water can sweep away an adult.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service warns nearly all provinces, except Limpopo, should brace for heavy snowfalls, torrential rain, and freezing temperatures until midweek.
The extreme winter weather is due to a powerful cold front, combined with a cut-off low-pressure system. The intense weather system is expected to continue until midweek, a weather service spokesperson explained.
