The Western Cape Mobility Department is turning to one of the province's biggest industrial players, SAB Maltings in Caledon, as a model for modernising freight transport, with a focus on shifting more cargo from roads to rail.
As part of Freight Focus Month , officials will tour the continent's largest malting plant on 18 August, spotlighting its success in local sourcing and rail logistics. The visit underscores a broader push to cut road congestion, boost efficiency, and drive greener supply chains in the Western Cape.
As confirmed by the Western Cape Mobility Department and per the South African Government , SAB Maltings is a freight powerhouse, 95 of its raw materials are sourced locally, and it already uses rail for inbound barley shipments. This makes it a prime candidate for future rail expansion projects aimed at easing truck traffic on key routes.
