A growing backlash is mounting against the proposed renaming of several towns in the Eastern Cape, with over 38,000 residents submitting formal objections and opposition parties accusing the government of pushing through changes without proper public consultation.
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie gazetted the proposed name changes last month, triggering a heated debate about identity, heritage and public participation. Among the proposals are renaming Graaff-Reinet to Robert Sobukwe, East London to KuGompo City, Adendorp to Bishop Limba and Aberdeen to Xamdeboo.
The proposals have sparked widespread public debate, particularly in the affected communities, where some residents say they learned of the changes only after the names were published in the Government Gazette. The Democratic Alliance DA has criticised the move, arguing that communities were sidelined in the process. DA Member of Parliament Leander Kruger said meaningful consultation must be central to any renaming process.
