The establishment of Gautengs crime prevention wardens CPW, also known as traffic wardens GTW or Amapanyaza, was irregular, Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka has found.
In October 2022, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced that the provincial government would recruit 6,000 youths to help fight crime in the province. Recruitment began in November 2022, and the first batch were deployed in May 2023.
However, Paul Hoffman, a director at public interest organisation Accountability Now, filed a complaint with the Public Protector in September 2023. He alleged that the establishment of the wardens constituted maladministration.
