Despite rising concerns over gang-related violence in the Cape Flats, the Presidency has confirmed that there are no plans to deploy the South African National Defence Force SANDF to the area, pushing back against recent reports suggesting military intervention may be imminent , as per Cape Town news.
The clarification comes following a troubling start to the year in the Western Cape, where nearly 200 murders have been recorded in just over two weeks.
Figures released for January paint a stark picture of ongoing instability. Between 1 and 17 January 2026, the province recorded 195 murders, averaging 11 deaths a day, with authorities linking most cases to gang activity and mass shootings concentrated in known high-risk communities.
