The National Energy Regulator of South Africa NERSA registered 181 generation facilities with a combined capacity of 1 401 MW during the second quarter of the 2025/26 financial year July-September 2025. This is an improvement from the second quarter of the previous financial year 2024/25 when 149 registration applications were processed.

Solar photovoltaic projects accounted for 175 of the 181 registrations, totalling 650 MW of capacity. Four wind projects contributed 750 MW while one biogas 0,3 MW and one battery energy storage system 1 MW completed the technology mix.

The total investment value of the newly registered projects is estimated at R30,78 billion with the Western Cape leading in installed capacity 872 MW and investment R20,77 billion. Limpopo and the Northern Cape follow at 154 MW and 150 MW respectively. Gauteng recorded the highest number of projects 67, reflecting continued uptake of small-scale and rooftop installations.
