The Lwandle Library has been forced to close its doors indefinitely following a break-in that occurred over the weekend, reports Cape town Etc .
Library staff discovered the aftermath of the attempted burglary when they arrived at work early Monday morning. Perpetrators used an unorthodox method to bypass security, gaining entry through the ceiling.
Once inside, they vandalised the electrical system and damaged crucial water pipes, resulting in substantial flooding.
The incident is not only a blow to the librarys physical assets but also to the community, who rely on its services for education and resources.
An initial damage assessment is currently underway, as City officials evaluate the significant water damage and attempt to restore the electricity. The break-in comes just weeks before a planned renovation project worth nearly R12 million was scheduled to commence, aimed at modernising and enhancing the librarys facilities for the public.
