The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union POPCRU has called on government to properly resource investigative and intelligence police units while also intensifying efforts to deal with organised crime networks.
This follows the mass shooting in Bekkersdal on the West Rand in Gauteng on Sunday, which claimed the lives of nine people.
The union says police alone will not be able to fight crime and has called on communities to also stand up against the violence plaguing the country.
