A 30-year-old woman was gunned down in Heideveld on Saturday morning, 9 August, in a drive-by shooting that occurred mere kilometres away from the launch of the Silencing The Guns campaign, an initiative aimed at reducing firearm-related violence in Cape Town's gang hotspots.

According to eNCA , the incident took place at approximately 11:15am on 5th Street, close to Phoenix Secondary School. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that a murder case had been opened, though no arrests had yet been made. The motive remains unclear, but the victim's family believes she was targeted due to her involvement as a witness in a gang-related murder case.

Tragedy on Women's Day

The shooting happened on Women's Day, as community leaders and law enforcement gathered in Manenberg to launch the Silencing The Guns campaign. Vanessa Adriaanse, deputy chairperson of the Manenberg Community Police Forum CPF, described the incident as devastating , particularly given the event's focus on protecting women from gun violence.

We were celebrating Women's Day, acknowledging the struggles of women on the Cape Flats, only to receive a call that a woman had just been killed , Adriaanse said. How abnormal can our community become?

Illegal firearms crisis

Reports from iOL indicate that the tragedy has reignited concerns over the flood of illegal firearms in the Western Cape. Authorities estimate that 39 of gun violence in the province occurs in hotspot areas like Heideveld and Manenberg.
