Eskom has announced that it has attached the bank accounts of Emfuleni Municipality after it failed to comply with the debt relief programme.
The power utility says this is to help it recover R8 billion owed to it by the municipality.
Eskom says the municipality is no longer a beneficiary of the Municipal Finance Act debt relief programme after numerous breaches.
It says the attachment of the municipalitys four bank accounts will ensure that money collected for electricity is paid directly to Eskom.
Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says the R8 billion owned by Emfuleni represents 10 of the total R82 billion owed by municipalities.
