Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has called for calm and unity following violent incidents in Addo over the weekend , which resulted in the deaths of four people and left ten others injured.

The violence reportedly began after a resident was killed, allegedly by foreign nationals. This was followed by retaliatory attacks in which three foreign nationals were killed.

Eastern Cape Provincial Government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie urged communities to work with law enforcement to ensure accountability.

"Government urges communities to fully cooperate with the law enforcement officers to ensure that justice is served. The Eastern Cape has a proud history of diversity and inclusivity and the provincial government calls on residents to continue to foster an environment where all individuals, regardless of their origin, feel safe and valued," said Rantjie.

The provincial government has also conveyed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives.
