A quiet vineyard in Durbanville is drawing renewed attention on South Africa's wine map after Groot Phesantekraal winemaker Richard Schroeder secured runner-up honours in the 2026 Winemag.co.za and iTOO Next Generation Awards , a recognition that places one of the Cape's rising young wine talents firmly in the national spotlight.

At just 33, Schroeder's latest accolade adds fresh momentum to the growing conversation around cool-climate Chenin Blanc and the evolving identity of Durbanville wines.

The award recognised the craftsmanship behind the estate's Anna de Koning Reserve Chenin Blanc vintages from 2024 and 2025, which scored 94 and 93 points respectively in the prestigious competition for winemakers under the age of 35.
