The South African Social Security Agency SASSA has raised concerns following a reported increase in unlawful deductions from the social grants of vulnerable beneficiaries, attributed to aggressive marketing practices by some financial service providers, Cape town Etc reports.
In a statement released on Thursday, SASSA revealed that many beneficiaries have reported unexpected reductions in their grant payments, stemming from deductions initiated by insurance companies that they claim to have never engaged with.
SASSA, which operates as the custodian of social welfare, has consistently sought to clarify that it has no affiliations with any such entities that misappropriate its name for their gain.
