A routine patrol in Khayelitsha has exposed a growing environmental and safety concern, after City officials uncovered an illegal sand mining operation operating in plain sight, Cape townEtc .
In a brief account shared publicly by JP Smith via Facebook, the discovery was made while Neighbourhood Safety Officers were conducting oversight duties in the area, where trucks and heavy machinery were found actively extracting sand without authorisation.
The operation was then swiftly halted, with enforcement teams moving in to secure the site and prevent further damage, and the initial response saw trucks and machinery impounded on-site.
