Cape Town is scaling up its efforts to tap into the worlds most lucrative outbound tourism market, with the City set to expand its marketing campaign targeting Chinese travellers after early phases generated millions of views across key digital platforms.

According to the UN World Tourism Organisation, Chinese travellers were in 2024 the biggest outbound spending category globally, spending an estimated 250 billion - far surpassing the US, which ranked second at roughly 177.8 billion.

Fresh off a trade mission in Shanghai, the Citys MMC for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, said strengthening Cape Towns visibility in Chinas outbound travel market could be transformative for the Mother Citys visitor economy.
