Cape Town is moving ahead with plans to lessen its dependence on Eskom, with a new proposal to generate electricity from waste as part of efforts to shield residents from rising energy costs.
The City has outlined a waste-to-energy initiative that would see power sourced from independent producers, using a competitive Power Purchase Agreement model that could run for as long as 20 years, as per EWN .
Under the plan, the municipality intends to purchase electricity generated from waste, targeting at least 5 megawatts of supply, provided the projects meet commercial viability requirements.
