Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says preliminary findings indicate that the bus that crashed and killed 43 people outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo was travelling at high speed while descending a mountainous area.
Creecy says a mechanical inspection revealed that several of the brakes were not in working condition. She says the bus owner will be contacted for an inspection of their buses operating in the country.
I have this morning interacted with the Acting CEO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation, and I have asked that we need to contact the bus owners of that company and we need to do an inspection of the entire fleet that is operating in our country to assess the roadworthiness of that fleet. I have also asked my team for legal advice as to how we deal with the potential situation of culpable homicide.
