Civil society group AfriForum has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for insulting Afrikaner refugees by calling them cowards.

The first group of Afrikaners who have taken up United States US President Donald Trumps resettlement offer arrived in the US on Monday 12 May.

Speaking to the media at the Nampo festival in the Free State on Tuesday, Ramaphosa it was a sad moment for the group.

"It's a group of South Africans demonstrating that the changes and transformation that we are embarking on here, they're not favourably disposed to it. That's why they are running away. As South Africans , we are resilient. We don't run away from our problems," he added.

"And if you look at all national groups in our country, black and white, they've stayed in this country because it's our country and we must not run away from our problems.

We must stay here and solve our problems. When you run away you are a coward, and that's a real cowardly act ."

Ramaphosa to blame for Afrikaner exodus - AfriForum

However, AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel claims Ramaphosa is responsible for the exodus and planned emigration of Afrikaners to the US and the rest of the world.

In a statement on Wednesday, Kriel claimed the Presidents continued refusal to condemn the Kill the Boer chant has alienated Afrikaners.

He also cited the Basic Education Laws Amendment BELA Act, Expropriation Act and discriminatory racial legislation and draconian racial regulations as issues that alienate the community.

The government has defended these policies as necessary to achieve redress and transformation for groups that were previously marginalised by apartheid.
