Setting The Standard As The Only Current Net Zero Waste Certified Hotel by Green Building Council of South Africa

Western Cape, South Africa (November 2024) - Hotel Verde Cape Town Airport proudly announces its achievement of the prestigious Net Zero Waste certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), marking a milestone in the hospitality industry for its exemplary waste diversion efforts. The hotel surpassed the required 90% landfill diversion rate, achieving an impressive 93% diversion rate for operational waste from 1 March 2023 to 28 February 2024, underscoring its dedication to sustainability.

Sustainability is not just a choice; its our responsibility, says Caron van Rooyen, General Manager. Located near Cape Town International Airport, Hotel Verde merges 4-star luxury with eco-friendly practices, offering 151 rooms, a spa, and conference facilities.

At the heart of Hotel Verde's visionary journey lies the inspiration of its founder and director, Mario Delicio, "As a company, we hold a responsibility to care for our environment and the society we inhabit. It's time we stop viewing waste as mere refuse destined for landfills. Instead, we must recognise waste as a valuable resource'precious to us all."

Hotel Verdes journey to Net Zero Waste was driven by two main strategies:

1. Sustainable purchasing policy: By promoting reusable packaging and sourcing locally, the hotel minimises waste and reduces its carbon footprint.

2. Waste separation and composting: The hotel provides bins for recyclables and food waste, promoting sustainability among guests and staff. This approach has led to the composting of over 46,803 kg of food waste, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Hotel Verde stands as the only Net Zero Waste Certified hotel in Africa, a testament to effective collaborations and teamwork. The Green Building Council of South Africa and Green Gap Consulting praise the hotels commitment to sustainable tourism. Zero to Landfill Organics and the Don't Waste Group have been instrumental in achieving this certification by managing and composting waste.

Looking forward, Hotel Verde aims to achieve a Net Positive Waste certification, reflecting its commitment to setting new sustainability benchmarks. For more information, follow Hotel Verde on social media or visit www.hotelverde.com.
