Cape Town, October 2024 ' As pets become cherished members of families across South Africa, Carolyn Dudgeon, Founder and Executive Director of Paws-a-While, has made it her life's mission to foster collaboration among animal welfare organizations and raise awareness about the plight of homeless companion animals.

Addressing a Global Crisis

The urgency of Paws-a-While's mission is underscored by staggering statistics from pet-food distributor Mars' 2024 State of Pet Homelessness Project: 35% of cats and dogs worldwide live on the streets or in shelters, with 143 million dogs and 203 million cats currently homeless.

Paws-a-Whiles regular Pet Adoption & Pet Care Fairs not only showcase animals in need of homes but also honor the heroes who tirelessly rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome them. These fairs provide a unique platform where rescue organizations, pet care brands, and the public unite to demonstrate their shared commitment to animal welfare, building a community bonded by compassion.

Carolyn reflects on her role, saying, "I never intended to be a leader; I just wanted to help ease suffering wherever I found it, whether for people or animals." Despite her modest intentions, her sincere dedication has naturally placed her at the forefront of efforts to promote pet adoption and animal care.

A Platform for Change

Under Carolyn's leadership, Paws-a-While has grown from a pioneering adoption platform into a champion for animal welfare and the broader community. Beyond rescuing pets, in underserved areas, Paws-a-While conducts vaccination drives and encourages responsible pet ownership, while educational initiatives teach humane treatment and proper care, fostering compassion for animals.

This October, Paws-a-While hosted one of the worlds largest World Animal Day celebrations at the Sea Point Promenade, bringing together numerous animal welfare organizations to promote pet adoption, vaccination, and responsible pet care. This achievement underscores Paws-a-Whiles commitment to raising the profile of animal welfare both locally and globally.

Celebrating World Cities Day

In conjunction with these efforts, Paws-a-While is proud to highlight the importance of World Cities Day, established in 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly. Celebrated on October 31st, World Cities Day aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable¯ as part of Sustainable Development Goal 11. This observance day emphasizes creating better living conditions for everyone, including pets, recognizing that companion animals are integral members of many families.

Carolyn emphasizes, World Cities Day is a reminder that building better cities includes considering the welfare of all inhabitants'humans and animals alike. By ensuring our cities are pet-friendly and fostering responsible pet ownership, we create more compassionate, cohesive communities.¯

Expanding Impact through Partnerships

The nonprofits impactful initiatives have attracted the support of global pet food giant Mars, enhancing its mission to improve the lives of animals. Together, they aim to inspire communities to take action and support responsible pet ownership.

"Pet homelessness is a complex and pressing global challenge that demands our collective attention," stated Suraya Hamdulay, Corporate Affairs Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Mars. "We are honored to work with passionate animal welfare nonprofits like Paws-a-While. Together, we can increase the number of pets finding loving homes and ensure they receive the compassionate care they deserve."

Advice for Aspiring Community Organizers

Carolyn encourages those looking to create social impact to prioritize collaboration, education, and community engagement. "Partnering with reputable organizations can amplify your efforts and extend your reach," she advises. "In the animal welfare space, collaboration fosters a unified front, ensuring that resources are pooled for maximum impact. Its essential to understand that change doesn't happen overnight.
