western cape declares new conservancy

The Western Cape sees another conservancy with the establishment of the Karoo Gateway Conservancy.

Located in the Klaarstroom district, the 18 000 hectare conservancy was founded by a group of local farmers with a voluntary agreement to manage their land in an environmentally sustainable way, considering biodiversity conservation, eco-tourism and sustainable agriculture.

CapeNature will provide input and guidance on management plans and biodiversity assessments and potentially also offer funding to support the conservancy, acting as a custodian. The conservancy will become part of CapeNatures network of recognised conservancies in the Western Cape.
