weekend crash numbers nearly double in cape town

Road safety has taken centre stage in Cape Town following a staggering increase in motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents over the weekend, as reported by the Public Emergency Communication Centre PECC.

Between Friday and Sunday, PECC recorded 60 motor vehicle accidents and 21 pedestrian vehicle accidents, marking a near 100 increase from the previous weekends tally of 41 such incidents, Cape town Etc reports.

Total reported incidents reached 1 825 over the weekend, which included 648 medical emergencies along with 34 fires, 96 cases of assault, and 53 instances of domestic violence.

The sharp rise in road-related incidents has raised alarm bells amongst City authorities who are grappling with the implications of safety on the roads during inclement weather conditions.

Mayco for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith condemned the alarming statistics, stating, These statistics are a grim reminder of the challenges we face with road safety. With the current wet weather over the city, the odds are that the rate of incidents will remain high.
