Residents and trustees of a residential building in Upper Long Street, Cape Town, are sounding the alarm as they appeal a recent decision by the Western Cape Liquor Authority, which granted a liquor licence to a nightclub situated mere metres from their homes.
They argue that the decision has exacerbated severe noise pollution and unsettling late-night activity, threatening their quality of life.
In an exclusive interview with Cape town Etc, residents lamented that despite their numerous formal objections and clear evidence presented concerning noise levels and after-hours operations, the licence was approved without consideration for their plight.
These night establishments have turned our residential area into a den of illegal activity. We have witnessed rampant drug trade and even prostitution along this stretch of Long Street, making living conditions unbearable, residents stated.
They expressed frustration over the ineffectiveness of local law enforcement, citing regular nonchalance from the South African Police Service SAPS regarding the deteriorating situation.
