Getting your learner's licence in the Western Cape is about to become a high-tech experience, as the province rolls out a brand-new computerised testing system aimed at slashing waiting times, curbing corruption and making roads safer.

On Monday, 26 May, the Beaufort West Driving Licence Testing Centre became the first site to launch the province's new Computerised Learner's Licence Testing CLLT system. According to provincial officials, this isn't just about going digital it's about delivering dignity, transparency, and opportunity.

'Many jobs today require a valid driver's licence,' said Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku. 'If we want to unlock economic potential, the licensing process must be fair and accessible to everyone.'

According to Smile FM , the new setup ditches paper-based testing for a secure touchscreen interface that instantly scores applicants and is linked to the National Traffic Information System NaTIS. Using biometric logins and randomised questions, the platform ensures that every test is secure and tamper-proof, a sharp contrast to the outdated booklet exams of the past.

Other highlights include on-screen support in multiple languages, including assistance for the hearing-impaired, and a backup power supply that keeps the system online during load shedding.
