Disaster officials in the Garden and Little Karoo region of the Western Cape say the recent storms that ravaged the area will teach them how to better manage incidents like these in the future. The storms brought with it widespread flooding and damage to homes, businesses and municipal infrastructure, as well as loss of life. Disaster head, Gerhard Otto says, We trying to build back better so we look at the areas that failed so that we need to put in additional measures to be able to deal with the next storm better. For the first storm some areas received 300mm of rain. In the Karoo that is just about 80 percent of the annual rainfall in two days. This time around 380mm in some areas. Its 600, 700mm of rain in a period of six days. The effect in our district is immense and on our road networks specifically.
