The Department of Mechanical Engineering Science at the University of Johannesburg UJ has proposed that South Africa should establish an open ancillary services market to maintain grid stability and drive competition under the countrys new Electricity Regulation Act ERA.
The findings were presented by Professor Pathmanathan Naidoo , Research and Innovation Chair: Green Economy, during the CIGRE Southern Africa Regional Conference in Pretoria from October 14-17.
The ERA, which took effect on January 1, 2025, was cited as a cornerstone of South Africas electricity market reform.
