The United Democratic Movement UDM says it supports the African National Congress ANC's proposal to expand the 10-party coalition in the government of national unity GNU.
UDM leader Bantu Holomisa says the move would help stabilise the GNU and prevent it from being influenced by parties threatening to leave when disagreements arise.
Several parties in the GNU have opposed the proposal. The ANC's suggestion follows tensions with its largest partner, the Democratic Alliance, over budget allocations and policy issues.
Holomisa says the GNU must prioritise the country's interests .
"There was no winner in the elections of South Africa in 2024, hence the GNU today. It meant, therefore, that all parties in Parliament are eligible to participate if they want to. So there's nothing wrong with extending that. The best way is to always sit around the table and say if you talk about policy A, this is what we are suggesting, and then you find an agreement and consensus," Holomisa says.
