A Johannesburg Equality Court has ordered the Department of Correctional Services to provide gender-affirming hormone therapy and to allow a transgender inmate full access to feminising clothing, cosmetics and her chosen pronouns, reports Cape town Etc .
According to the Cape Times , Judge Denise Fisher found that denying hormone treatment and restricting gender expression amounted to unfair discrimination and harassment under the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act.
The judgment requires the department to make medical care available at State expense and to place the inmate in housing that reflects her gender identity .
