Five South African universities were listed among the best global tertiary institutions for engineering and technology studies in 2024.

This is according to the 14 th edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, which analysed over 16 000 programmes at 1 500 universities.

The rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation, citation per paper and the H index, which measures how many papers have been released by a universitys authors and how many times these papers have been cited.

In electrical and electronic engineering, the University of Pretoria has been ranked as the top university in the country, followed by the University of Cape Town, the University of Johannesburg and Stellenbosch University.

In general engineering and technology studies, the University of Cape Town was ranked the best university in South Africa and 290 th in global rankings.

While rankings do not offer a definitive analysis of our university, they do give an interesting perspective on the work we do, said Professor Themba Mosia , Interim UP Vice-Chancellor.

On a global scale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the highest-ranked university for electrical and electronic engineering, followed by Stanford University and the University of California Berkeley.
