Parents and pupils in parts of the Western Cape are being urged to prepare for a short but significant disruption to the school week, as authorities move to close dozens of schools ahead of expected heavy rainfall , Cape town Etc reports.
The decision, officially confirmed by the Western Capes Minister of Education, affects selected areas in the Eden and Central Karoo education district, where schools will remain closed on Wednesday, 6 May and Thursday, 7 May 2026.
The call to suspend classes didn't come lightly. Education officials say it followed detailed consultations with disaster management teams and weather experts, who flagged a high risk of disruptive rainfall in the region. While school closures are typically avoided, officials say the intensity of the current warning left little room for hesitation.
