As the summer school holidays begin, the National Sea Rescue Institute NSRI is urging South Africans to stay alert around water after a sharp increase in emergency callouts, many of which involve children, over the past three weeks, reports Cape town Etc .
In its festive-season safety statement, the NSRI wished the public a joyful break but emphasised that vigilance is critical.
Public vigilance, lifeguard services and community collaboration continue to save lives every day, said NSRI Communications Manager Andrew Ingram.
